Chapter 1:17
“Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.”
The three days Jonah spent in the fish represent Christ’s death and resurrection. The fish represents the Roman Empire. Jonah represents the nation of Israel, disobedient. The city of Nineveh represents the Gentiles, people who were ready to repent from sin. (See also Matthew 12:40-41)
